PERSONAL PROTECTION TRAINING
NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course
This 8-hour course is designed to develop in the students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen’s right to self-defense. Unlike the other basic courses, the course is designed around the use of the defensive pistol. Although the course can be completed in eight hours, the amount of information presented, and the probability of intensive question and answer sessions on the included topics, makes it likely that the course will take longer. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home handbook and intensive lessons on basics of defensive shooting, issues of self-defense, and other strategies for protecting the home and family. The course is intended for mature law-abiding adults, who have the mindset and seriousness necessary to properly perform the activities in the course. Self-defense is not a topic that lends itself to horseplay and distractions. Participants should be experienced shooters, with knowledge of the basic skills of safe gun handling. Students will be given feedback on their shooting exercises, and a certificate upon successful completion of the lessons. Not only are shooting standards fired during the practical exercises, but also a written exam will be given at the end of the course.
Prerequisites:
- U.S. citizen or legal resident of 21 years of age or older.
- Puerto Rico Firearms License with Target Shooting Permit.
- NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.
- Students are required to provide:

- “Pocket Pistols” are not allowed.
- Holsters must correctly fit the firearm, completely cover the trigger guard and remain open when the firearm is removed.
- Minimum of 150 rounds of factory ammunition (no hand reloads allowed).
- Comfortable clothing, knee-pads (optional) and foot wear suitable for training outdoors.
- Electronic hearing protection (mandatory), eye protection and baseball cap.

NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home Course
This course is designed to develop in students the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective, responsible, and ethical use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home. Students have the opportunity to attend this course using a quality, strong-side, hip holster that covers the trigger, or a holster purse. From a review of safe firearms handling and proper mindset, to presentation from concealment and multiple shooting positions, this course contains the essential skills and techniques needed to prevail in a life-threatening situation. The NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home series is divided into two levels (PPOTH Basic and PPOTH Advanced). Level one is a minimum of nine-hour course and offers the essential knowledge and skills that must be mastered in order to carry, store, and use a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the home. Upon completion of level one, students may choose to attend level two, which is an additional minimum of five hours of range training and teaches advanced shooting skills. After the classroom portion, students should expect to spend several hours on the range and shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition during level one. Level two involves five additional hours on the range and approximately 150 rounds of ammunition. The ammunition requirements are a minimum. Students will be given feedback on their shooting exercises, and a certificate upon successful completion of the lessons. Not only are shooting standards fired during the practical exercises, but also a written exam will be given at the end of the course. This is a 1-1/2 to 2 day class, so please plan accordingly. Instructor candidates need both the Basic and Advanced training in the course.
